As we reach the midpoint of 2024, we can look back on what has been a pretty exciting year for movies. It is by no means over, as we go through some of our picks for what we think will be the best releases of the second half of the year.
Here are a few of our most anticipated movies of 2024. (Disclaimer: As of June 2024).
Maxxxine (July 5)
“Maxxxine” is the highly anticipated horror thriller directed by Ti West, completing the trilogy that started with “X” and “Pearl.” Set in the 1980s, the film follows Maxine, portrayed by Mia Goth, as she navigates the dark and dangerous world of Los Angeles while chasing her dreams of stardom. Known for blending slasher elements with rich, atmospheric storytelling, this installment promises to deliver the same intense, gripping narrative that captivated audiences in the previous films.
Alien: Romulus (Aug. 16)
“Alien: Romulus” is an upcoming science fiction horror film directed by Fede Álvarez, adding a fresh chapter to the iconic “Alien” franchise. While plot details are tightly under wraps, the film is expected to return to the series’ roots, delivering intense suspense and terrifying encounters with the infamous Xenomorphs. Produced by Ridley Scott, the movie promises to blend the classic horror elements that fans love with new, innovative twists. Anticipation is high as we look forward to this thrilling addition to the legendary sci-fi saga.
Joker: Folie a Deux (Oct. 4)
“Joker: Folie à Deux” is an eagerly awaited psychological thriller directed by Todd Phillips, serving as the sequel to the critically acclaimed “Joker.” Starring Joaquin Phoenix, who reprises his Oscar-winning role as Arthur Fleck, and Lady Gaga in a new yet undisclosed role, the film delves deeper into the disturbed mind of the Joker. Set against a haunting musical backdrop, “Folie à Deux” promises to explore the complex and twisted relationship between its characters. With high expectations following the success of its predecessor, this sequel aims to deliver another compelling and darkly immersive cinematic experience.
Gladiator 2 (Nov. 22)
Possibly the most hyped release on our list, “Gladiator 2” is the much-anticipated sequel to Ridley Scott’s epic historical drama “Gladiator.” Directed once again by Scott, the film aims to continue the legacy of the original, which starred Russell Crowe and won multiple Academy Awards. This sequel will feature Paul Mescal as Lucius, the nephew of Commodus, and will explore the aftermath of Maximus’ legacy on the Roman Empire. With an impressive cast and Scott’s return to the director’s chair, “Gladiator 2” promises to deliver epic battles, political intrigue, and a powerful continuation of the story that captivated audiences over two decades ago.
The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim (Dec. 9)
“The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim” is an upcoming animated film directed by Kenji Kamiyama, set in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth. The story supposedly focuses on the legendary King Helm Hammerhand and the historic events at Helm’s Deep, occurring centuries before the renowned “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy. The movie promises to delve into the rich lore and epic battles of Rohan, offering fans a visually stunning and immersive experience. Whilst details at the moment are sparse, we hope it will be more successful in recapturing the magic of the original trilogy and books (than the admittedly inferior “Hobbit” trilogy and Rings of Power series).
Nosferatu (Dec. 25)
“Nosferatu” is an upcoming horror film set for release on December 25, directed by Robert Eggers. This modern reimagining of F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent classic stars Bill Skarsgård as the eerie Count Orlok and Lily-Rose Depp as his haunted obsession. Set in the dark, atmospheric backdrop of 19th-century Transylvania, the film promises to deliver a fresh yet faithful take on the iconic vampire tale.
