As we reach the midpoint of 2024, we can look back on what has been a pretty exciting year for movies. It is by no means over, as we go through some of our picks for what we think will be the best releases of the second half of the year.

Here are a few of our most anticipated movies of 2024. (Disclaimer: As of June 2024).

Known for blending slasher elements with rich, atmospheric storytelling, this installment promises to deliver the same intense, gripping narrative that captivated audiences in the previous films.

Alien: Romulus (Aug. 16)

Anticipation is high as we look forward to this thrilling addition to the legendary sci-fi saga.

Joker: Folie a Deux (Oct. 4)

Joker: Folie à Deux” is an eagerly awaited psychological thriller directed by Todd Phillips, serving as the sequel to the critically acclaimed “Joker.” Starring Joaquin Phoenix, who reprises his Oscar-winning role as Arthur Fleck, and Lady Gaga in a new yet undisclosed role, the film delves deeper into the disturbed mind of the Joker. Set against a haunting musical backdrop, “Folie à Deux” promises to explore the complex and twisted relationship between its characters. With high expectations following the success of its predecessor, this sequel aims to deliver another compelling and darkly immersive cinematic experience.

Gladiator 2 (Nov. 22)

Possibly the most hyped release on our list, “Gladiator 2” is the much-anticipated sequel to Ridley Scott’s epic historical drama “Gladiator.” Directed once again by Scott, the film aims to continue the legacy of the original, which starred Russell Crowe and won multiple Academy Awards. This sequel will feature Paul Mescal as Lucius, the nephew of Commodus, and will explore the aftermath of Maximus’ legacy on the Roman Empire. With an impressive cast and Scott’s return to the director’s chair, “Gladiator 2” promises to deliver epic battles, political intrigue, and a powerful continuation of the story that captivated audiences over two decades ago.

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim (Dec. 9)

Taken from YouTube.

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim” is an upcoming animated film directed by Kenji Kamiyama, set in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth. The story supposedly focuses on the legendary King Helm Hammerhand and the historic events at Helm’s Deep, occurring centuries before the renowned “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy. The movie promises to delve into the rich lore and epic battles of Rohan, offering fans a visually stunning and immersive experience. Whilst details at the moment are sparse, we hope it will be more successful in recapturing the magic of the original trilogy and books (than the admittedly inferior “Hobbit” trilogy and Rings of Power series).

Nosferatu (Dec. 25)

screenshot taken from teaser of nosferatu (2024)
Taken from YouTube.

Nosferatu” is an upcoming horror film set for release on December 25, directed by Robert Eggers. This modern reimagining of F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent classic stars Bill Skarsgård as the eerie Count Orlok and Lily-Rose Depp as his haunted obsession. Set in the dark, atmospheric backdrop of 19th-century Transylvania, the film promises to deliver a fresh yet faithful take on the iconic vampire tale.

Those were our picks for the movies we are most excited for during the rest of 2024. Check out our other posts for more content like this.

Summer is finally here, and what better way to enjoy the warmer months than by sitting inside in the dark. This list will run through 5 of our picks of the best movies to watch as summer is setting in.

1. Stand By Me (1986)

Rob Reiner’s masterful adaptation of Stephen King’s 1982 novel ‘The Body’, follows a group of friends during a fateful summer adventure. After hearing rumours of a dead body in the woods, the boys set off in search of it. Along the way the group, (played by fantastic child actors Will Wheaton, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, and Jerry O’Connell) uncover more than just a body, having to confront the realities of their own mortality and relationships with each other. An absolute classic, and the perfect movie to kick off your summer.

2. Dazed and Confused (1993)

Dazed and Confused is Richard Linklater’s coming-of-age masterpiece, featuring one of the greatest movie soundtracks and some of the most iconic lines of all time. The film follows a group of teenagers as they navigate their last day of school in 1976. it is not confined to a single character or plot thread, which benefits the movie’s tone greatly, as it has a very uniquely relaxed feel which not many others have achieved before or since. If you want a chilled-out nostalgia trip, this is the ideal option.

3. Do the Right Thing (1989)

Taken from YouTube.

Possibly the best depiction of a summer’s day that is just too hot, Spike Lee’s seminal Do the Right Thing also happens to be one of the greatest films ever made. A scathing look at the state of American race relations, the movie manages to feel just as fresh as it did in 1989. Bursting with bright colours and exciting cinematography, Do the Right Thing should be enjoyed with a pizza on a scorching hot day in order for one to truly feel immersed in its atmosphere.

4. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019)

Taken from YouTube.

The most recent entry on our list, Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is essentially a summer hangout movie, putting you in the passenger seat of struggling actor Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio), his stuntman and de-facto driver Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt) and star actress Sharon Tate (Margot Robbie). Set in 1969 Hollywood, the film is rich with incredible sets, music and an underrated meandering plot, which results in one of the best, most exhilarating movie endings of the 21st century. Put this one on a lazy Sunday afternoon and get lost in the immerse of the intricately constructed world of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

5. The Endless Summer (1966)

screenshot of the film the endless summer taken from youtube
Taken from YouTube.

The Endless Summer is a surf documentary film released in 1966. Bruce Brown directs, produces, edits, narrates and features in this semi-autobiographical look at the surfing trip of a lifetime. The film looks fantastic, featuring some unbelievable shots of vintage surf, taken from a diverse range of locations from New Zealand to Ghana. Scored by lesser-known surf-rock band The Sandals, The Endless Summer is the perfect summer movie, and deserves a larger reputation than the one it currently holds.

That was 5 of the best summer movies, perfect for the beginning of the season. Check back next week for posts like this one.

Baby Reindeer has enjoyed a massively successful few weeks on platform Netflix, garnering critical acclaim and great viewership numbers. It absolutely earns its hype, with writer, creator and lead Richard Gadd taking viewers on a twisty, tense and funny story. It is based on his own real-life experiences with a stalker, balancing Gadd’s personal struggles of trying to succeed in stand-up comedy with his new relationships (voluntary or not). At only 7 episodes, it is definitely worth a binge.

Fallout (Amazon Prime)

Ripley is an ambitious retelling of Patricia Highsmith’s 1955 novel The Talented Mr. Ripley, which received a very successful film adaptation in 1999. It leans heavily into classic neo-noir elements and is shot in black and white, giving Ripley a very different feel to its film counterpart.

Welcome to Wrexham (Disney +)

screenshot of welcome to wrexham trailer
Taken from YouTube.

Welcome to Wrexham has been a revelation since its first season in 2022. Following co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney as they tackle the unique proposition of restoring non-league football club Wrexham A.F.C. back to its former glories, the series is both comedic and genuinely heartfelt in its approach to exploring the many stories of Wrexham and its inhabitants, as well as the ups and downs of the football season. Season three has recently been released and is worth the watch, even for non-sports fans.

One for the historians, The Kinema in the Woods began as a sports pavilion in the 19th century, sitting in the grounds of The Victoria Hotel. After the Hotel burnt down, it was purchased and repurposed, opening its doors as a cinema in 1922. It is the only cinema in the UK to use rear projection, projecting its image from behind the screen using a mirror to flip the image (due to size constraints). Highly recommended for those want to experience a movie in an atmospheric and unique location.

Cartoon Network are responsible for some of the finest animated series ever aired. Check out our list of the 6 best of all time.

Although some would argue the channel no longer produces programmes with the same level of consistency and ingenuity as they did in the 1990s and 2000s, Cartoon Network remains a well-respected producer of children’s TV to this day. Let’s take a look at the 6 best shows the channel ever aired.

1. Courage the Cowardly Dog (1999-2002)

A screenshot from courage the cowardly dog
Image via YouTube.

The best Cartoon Network show of all time is – Courage the Cowardly Dog. Courage was created by John Dilworth, running for 4 seasons. The show followed the titular Courage, a kind-natured but nervous dog, and her owners, the friendly Muriel and villainous Eustace, who live in an isolated farmhouse in the middle of Nowhere, a fictional Kansas town. Each episode finds Courage dealing with a new threat, usually paranormal or supernatural, and sometimes human.

Although it is often not the first on the list for most people, this series was revolutionary not only for the network, but for kids TV in general. Kids shows like Goosebumps had previously incorporated horror elements into a children’s programme before, Courage was the first, in our opinion, to blend both horror, comedy and a unique animation style into one groundbreaking package. Winning an Annie, and nominated for three Golden Reel Awards, Courage the Cowardly Dog deserves its spot as the best show Cartoon Network ever aired.

2. The Powerpuff Girls (1998-2005)

A screenshot from the powerpuff girls
Image via YouTube.

Closely following Courage at the number two spot is The Powerpuff Girls, which centred on three genetically-made girls with superpowers, who fight crime in the fictional city of Townsville. Blending visual elements which echo 1950s futurist elements with typical kids coming-of-age themes and an overarching narrative based on standard superhero shows, The Powerpuff Girls was a phenomenon on release, becoming the highest-rated premiere in its history at the time. It consistently achieved high ratings throughout its run, receiving six seasons, three specials and a feature film, as well as being nominated for for six Emmy Awards.

3. Regular Show (2010-2017)

A screenshot from regular show
Image via YouTube.

One of the more recent entries on the list, Regular Show was part of the successful third era of Cartoon Network’s programming, one which included the mega-successful Adventure Time and Steven Universe. Running for eight seasons, Regular Show followed the daily lives of two slackers – Mordecai (a bluejay) and Rigby (a raccoon), who work as groundskeepers at a local park. Alongside them are a colourful cast of side characters. Each episode revolves around the two friends’ attempts to avoid work, entertaining themselves by any means possible, leading to surrealistic and supernatural conclusions.

The brilliance of Regular Show comes through its avoidance of typical TV standards – the tone of the show is vastly different to anything else within kids animation, often feeling like an adult sitcom at times. Creator J.G. Quintel has cited British sitcoms like The Office and The Mighty Boosh, alongside The Simpsons and Beavis and Butt-Head, as major inspirations behind Regular Show‘s core elements. Nominated (for six) and winning a Primetime Emmy, Regular Show has become one of the best-loved releases in the Cartoon Network catalogue.

4. Ed, Edd n Eddy (1999-2009)

A screenshot from ed, edd n eddy
Image via YouTube.

Ed, Edd n Eddy is one of Cartoon Network’s most iconic series, and for good reason. Following the lives of ‘the Eds’, three boys who share the same name, but have very different personalities. Each episode revolves around their schemes to get money from the other kids on their cul-de-sac, usually to buy their favourite: jawbreakers. The schemes rarely succeed, usually ending in failure and humiliation. The show never features any adults (except once during the excellent final episode), focusing only on the Eds’ world. The series was one of the last to use traditional cel animation, giving it an old-school feel. Over six seasons and a host of spin-off media, Ed, Edd n Eddy has cemented itself as an all-time great of kids animation.

5. Codename: Kids Next Door (2002-2008)

A screenshot from codename: kids next door
Image via YouTube.

Combining an innovative premise with a dynamic group of characters and a spy theme, Codename: Kids Next Door, was one of the best series Cartoon Network ever aired. Following the adventures of 5 diverse 10-year-olds, who operate as spies from a high-tech treehouse, acting under a global organisation called ‘the Kids Next Door’. Each episode is a different operation, and would often centre around typical childhood problems, although later episodes built towards an overarching, more complex narrative. A host of memorable villains, clever plot-lines and 81 episodes later, and Codename: Kids Next Door is now considered one of the best shows ever produced by Cartoon Network.

6. The Amazing World of Gumball (2011 -)

A screenshot from the amazing world of gumball
Image via YouTube.

The Amazing World of Gumball stands out as one of the best shows ever aired on Cartoon Network, due to its unparalleled creativity, mature topics and distinctive stylistic disunity. The show is based around the life of young cat Gumball and his misadventures in the city of Elmore. Usually found with his adopted brother and best friend – goldfish Darwin, Gumball is unique for its unusually broad humour palette, often referencing popular culture and internet culture, always maintaining a satirical and surreal tone. Still airing to this day, Gumball has proved a huge success for the network, with a spin-off series also on the way.

So, that was the 6 best Cartoon Network shows ever aired. Hopefully you enjoyed the list – if you disagree with our list, why not contact us via our socials, and let us know what you think.

Sometimes after you finish a really good series, it’s hard to find the energy to pick a new one to watch. Often, you just want to watch it all over again. This post will provide you with 4 great options to try, so you don’t have to risk wasting your time on something not worth it.

Here are 4 of the best TV shows streaming right now. (Disclaimer: current at time of writing: March 2024).

1. Shōgun (2024 -)

Shōgun, Disney Plus’ latest offering, transports viewers back to feudal Japan, providing a captivating blend of history, drama, and cultural exploration. Set against a backdrop of political intrigue and conflict, the series follows the journey of an English sailor who becomes embroiled in the complex power struggles of the samurai class. It is an excellent historical fish-out-of-water tale and a must-watch for 2024.

2. Fargo (2014 – )

FX’s crime anthology Fargo has been around for a while – since 2014 in fact. Throughout its 5 seasons, which each take place in a different time period and centre around new characters, viewers have been treated with a rich sense of American Midwestern identity and humour, which honour the Coen’s 1996 film which the series spawned from. Recently, in late 2023, season 5 was released, which was a welcome return to form after a slightly unsure fourth season. Starring screen favourites Juno Temple, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Jon Hamm (and many more), it is worth getting on the Fargo train before it comes to the end of its run.

3. 3 Body Problem (2024 – )

The new Netflix series 3 Body Problem presents a captivating blend of science fiction and mystery, drawing viewers into a thrilling exploration of humanity’s encounter with an enigmatic alien civilization. Created by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, creators of Game of Thrones and Alexander Woo, 3 Body Problem looks to be a very promising newcomer within the pantheon of sci-fi TV, featuring a talented (and familiar) cast and typically high production values.

4. One Day (2024)

Netflix’s decade-spanning new mini-series One Day, is a genuinely heartfelt exploration of life’s twists and turns, interwoven with themes of love, friendship, and personal evolution. With star turns from its two leads Leo Woodall and Ambika Mod, the timeless love story it tells stands as a testament to the power of TV storytelling in capturing snapshots of life’s big moments. It arguably outshines its 2011 film counterpart, expertly telling its narrative in its 14 short episodes.

1. Comfort is Everything

Ever heard of the saying “from the comfort of your home”?. This is arguably the most important factor to consider when putting together your own viewing space. Being comfortable in your own home, and by extension, when watching a movie can elevate the experience to another level. One of the first things that a good cinema should aim to do is to make audiences comfortable, and crucially, keep them comfortable. If your movie room is not comfortable to relax in, then what is the point? Below are a few seating option recommendations, tailored towards varying sizes and needs.

5. Quality is Everything

When you go to a cinema, the movies are shown on film. Obviously, this isn’t possible at home. The best way of replicating the crispness and quality of a cinema viewing experience is through buying your movies and TV series physically. Watching your content on Blu-ray and 4K Ultra-HD discs is probably the closest you can get to film.

Consider Criterion

The Criterion Collection licenses, restores and distributes ‘important classic and contemporary films’, releasing new movies monthly into their growing collection. When you buy a Criterion release, it feels special. It’s not just another movie added to the collection, but an investment akin to a vinyl record. Although it is in reality a Blu-Ray, the championing of restoring cinema in physical form is vital to the future of film as we know it.
